You can stay on the mainland by following Rt. 1, or you can take one of the bridges over to Balboa Peninsula or explore the several islands in the area. They’re all part of the Newport Beach neighborhood!


Newport Beach includes all of Newport Bay, so the neighborhood reaches as far inland as Rt. 73, where you’ll find the Newport Beach Golf Course and the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. It also extends southeast up to Crystal Cove State Park.

Things to do in Newport Beach

There’s no shortage of things to do in Newport Beach, California. Like any good California coastal town, there are plenty of pristine beaches for you to experience. Newport Beach (just the beach, not the town) is located on the Balboa Peninsula and boasts five miles of fine soft sand, walking and biking paths, and plenty of ocean for every swimmer and surfer.


Head down the Balboa Peninsula, and you’ll also find the Balboa Pier for some incredible offshore fishing and the world-famous surf spot, The Wedge.


On the inland side of the peninsula, you’ll find tons of marinas in Newport Bay. The bay used to be a major commercial port, but now it’s almost all recreational. If you own a boat, Newport Bay is a great place to store your vessel to protect it from the harsh ocean waves.


Like any great California beach town, there are also tons and tons of shops, restaurants, and five-star resorts for you to experience. Because the bay is so large, many of them offer incredible water views while you shop and dine. A Guide to Corona del Mar Jetty

Corona del Mar, California is full of interesting places to see and things to do. But one of the best landmarks in the city that’ll make you “swell” with excitement is the Corona del Mar Jetty.


There are two jetties that jut out from the shore off of Corona del Mar. The east jetty comes off Corona del Mar State Beach, and the west jetty (the larger) is just across the channel entry to Newport Harbor. Of course, the jetty is more than just a bunch of rocks piled high in the ocean. Here’s everything you need to know about the Corona del Mar Jetty.

What to know about the jetty

Corona del Mar Beach has always been a popular spot. Back in the 1920s, it was a popular spot for surfers and beach parties alike. Unfortunately, the waves weren’t always consistent. However, that all changed.


The 800-foot jetty was installed off the rocks at Big Corona and ran all the way into the beach. Although it wasn’t really meant for surfers, it definitely helped.


Surfers could walk out on the jetty, get in the water at Big Corona, and ride the waves for a whopping 800 feet all the way into shore. Rinse, repeat, and you have yourself one of the best surf spots in the country! Even better, the jetty made the waves much, much bigger, leading to the iconic surf spot called The Wedge.


The jetties were extended later in the decade, and they currently reach over 1,500 feet off the coast of Corona del Mar. It’s quite the sight!

How to get to Corona del Mar Jetty

Since the Corona del Mar Jetty splits the Newport Harbor Channel, there are two different ways to get there.


The east jetty is accessible from Corona del Mar State Beach Park. Simply go to downtown Corona del Mar on Rt. 1 and find a road called Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Ave. all the way down to the coast until you see the beach. From there, head out onto the sand until you see the impressive jetty sticking out into the water.


If you want to get to the west jetty (and The Wedge), it takes a little more effort. Ride all the way through Corona del Mar on Rt 1 until you get to Newport Beach. Then, go over the bridge onto the Balboa Peninsula, and follow West Balboa Blvd. all the way to the end. When the pavement stops, you’ll see the even larger west jetty and the massive waves crashing to the shore.

Things to do at Corona del Mar Jetty

It’s California! There’s always something fun to do. At the Corona del Mar Jetty, people have been having fun since the 1920s. Here are just a few of the exciting activities you can enjoy if you visit today:


Hit the beach: Naturally, Corona del Mar State Beach Park has some of the best white sandy beaches you can find. Catch some rays, build a sandcastle, or enjoy wading in the water.


Get a snack: Grab a beachside pit stop at The Jetty, a snack shack sitting right on the beach.


Go fishing: Make your way all the way out to the end of the massive west jetty for some of the best fishing in Corona del Mar.


And of course, catch a wave: Duh! The Wedge has some of the best surfing in the country! Grab a board and catch some waves.


And once you’re done with the fun at the jetty, head into town for some of the best restaurants, shopping, and fun in downtown Corona del Mar!

Between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach in southern Los Angeles, you’ll find the quaint neighborhood of Corona Del Mar. Directions to Corona Del Mar, California

It’s easy to get to Corona Del Mar. From just about anywhere in California, simply head west until you hit the Pacific Coast Highway or Route 101 (Route 1 in some areas). If you’re in downtown Los Angeles or anywhere north of LA, head south. If you’re south of LA or in San Diego, head north.


From there, simply keep driving until you see the signs that say Corona Del Mar. Route 1 goes right through the middle of Corona Del Mar, so it’s hard to miss!

A brief history of Corona Del Mar

The name Corona Del Mar translates to “Crown of the Sea.” And once you catch a glimpse of the beautiful beaches and seaside cliffs on the western edge of the town, it’s easy to see why!


The land was originally a ranch owned by the Irvine family in 1875. After years of drought and hard times, the oceanfront land (which had very little value to farmers) was sold to a man named George E. Hart.


Hart had a vision of creating quaint little beach towns all the way up the Southern California coast. He bought the property from the Irvines in 1904 and named his new development Corona Del Mar.

Development was slow at first, and the land changed hands a few times. But eventually, Corona Del Mar transformed from poor farmland to luxurious oceanfront properties, pristine world-class beaches, and adorable village shops and restaurants that attract visitors from all over the world. Today, Corona Del Mar is home to around 13,000 residents.

You can see classic Corona Del Mar in several films, including the Oscar-winner All Quiet on the Western Front, which helped add to its growing popularity over the years.

The name “Corona Del Mar” means “Crown of the Sea,” so it only makes sense that it’s home to some of the most picturesque, pristine, and unique beaches in the country. One of the more interesting beach sites in the city is Arch Rock. Here’s what you need to know about this popular rocky outcropping.

What’s so special about Arch Rock?

What’s Arch Rock? Well, the name pretty much says it all. It’s a big natural arch made of rock!
Sea arches are made from erosion from the ocean waves. Sometimes, the waves hit a section of the rock disproportionately to the rest, causing it to wear away faster. Over many, many years, that section wears away completely, leaving a hole in the middle of the rock. If the waves aren’t tall enough to erode the top of the rock, you’re left with an arch — just like Arch Rock in Corona Del Mar!

Things to do at Arch Rock in Corona Del Mar

As if seeing what nature can do over millions of years isn’t exciting enough, Arch Rock in Corona Del Mar is much more than a geological formation. There’s plenty to see and do in the area.

First and foremost, Arch Rock is beautiful! It offers incredible views of the ocean all around, and there’s no better Instagram shot than you standing in the middle of the arch. Go to Arch Rock at sunset and watch the colors dance across the sky behind the picturesque rock formations.

Corona Del Mar locals know Arch Rock for its cliff diving. The rocks at Arch Rock stand about 20 feet above the water, making them an ideal spot for adrenaline seekers. Climb to the top and safely jump into the ocean below for quite the thrill!

If you’re not into extreme sports, Arch Rock is also surrounded by several tidal pools for wading and enjoying the water. It’s also home to some of the best snorkeling in the city.

Directions to Little Del Mar Beach, Cliff Island, and Arch Rock

Arch Rock is one of the more secluded beaches in Corona Del Mar because it’s a bit off the beaten path, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the trek!
The easiest way to Arch Rock is through Little Corona Del Mar Beach. You can find Little Corona Del Mar Beach just off the Pacific Coast Highway on a road called Poppy Avenue. Go down Poppy Avenue and turn left where the road ends. Down the pathway, you’ll find a restroom and a gradual entrance down to the beach.
From the beach, head to the right and make your way over the sand and rocks. Around the corner, you’ll find Cliff Island. Keep going over the tidal pools and rocks, then look out to sea to find Arch Rock, standing majestically out in the water. Check it out on Google Maps!
The tides do change, so make sure you’re prepared before making the voyage out to Arch Rock. Wear shoes with decent tread — and prepare to get wet!

If Isaac Newton were buying a home today, he might wait.

“What goes up must come down,” after all.

But unlike gravity, the forces that apply downward pressure on real estate are not so predictable.

Southern California real estate is booming. Last month in Orange County, single-family homes averaged just 6 days on the market, and the price paid per square foot was up 15% from a year ago. Why?

It’s not a bubble, according to NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun. “It is simply a lack of supply.”

While the last housing craze was driven by dangerous lending that made disaster all but inevitable, the factors driving today’s market show no signs of slowing.

Buyer demand is high thanks to low mortgage rates and more time spent at home, and financial institutions are further adding to demand. On the other hand, housing supply is at historic lows. Some sellers would rather not compete for their next home, listings that do hit the market are snatched up fast, and builders are facing higher material costs.

Will any of this change substantially any time soon? No one has a crystal ball to know for certain. Prices could go down, stay flat or keep rising. But there’s no guarantee of a discount or a smoother ride for those who wait. Looking back a year from now, today’s listings might seem a relative bargain.
