4 Outdoor Activities in Corona del Mar

Aerial view of corona del mar and the jetty
There’s something for every outdoor lover in Corona del Mar.

In the quaint seaside neighborhood of Corona del Mar, there’s always something fun to do! And what could be better than a day outside in the beautiful California sunshine? If you’re looking for some fun in the sun, here are four of the best outdoor activities in Corona del Mar.

Hit the beach

The only thing more famous than the California sunshine is the beaches. There are tons of pristine beaches running all the way up the coast, and several of the best are located right in Corona del Mar.

The most popular beach in the area is Corona del Mar State Beach Park. There you’ll find 30 acres of white sandy shores and blue surf. Since it’s framed by rock jetties and cliffs, the surf is rather tame, which is great for swimmers and divers. As you head south down the coast, you’ll find spots with more waves for surfing.

One of the best parts of this beach (especially for those who know the greater Los Angeles area) is the parking. There’s tons of it! You can find the massive parking lot right off Ocean Boulevard in the northwest area of Corona del Mar.

Aerial view of a large beach and a city behind it
There’s plenty of beach to go around

Stroll the Sherman Gardens

One of the most visited places in Corona del Mar is the beautiful Sherman Library & Gardens. While the library itself is amazing for any book, history, or art lover, none of that is outside! However, the outside areas of the Sherman Library are just as amazing as the inside.

Just beyond the doors lies the Sherman Gardens. It’s a horticultural oasis filled with all sorts of plants, flowers, and trees for you to admire:

· Over 100 species of palms
· Tropical conservatory
· Koi pond
· Carnivorous plants
· Extensive orchid collection
· Artistic succulent garden
· And much, much more

The gardens are so amazing they’ve become nationally renowned for their variety and creativity. It’s definitely a must-see for anyone in the area and one of the best outdoor activities in Corona del Mar.

Catch the dazzling beauty of the Sherman Gardens in Corona del Mar.

Jump into the water at Arch Rock

The coastline of Corona del Mar isn’t all about the sandy beaches. There are also plenty of amazing cliffs, tidal pools, and rock formations to explore. One of the more amazing rock formations is Arch Rock.

Arch Rock is exactly like it sounds: it’s a massive rock arch! You can find Arch Rock at Little Corona del Mar beach just to the south of Corona del Mar State Beach Park.

Once you get to Little Corona del Mar beach, go down to the water and turn right toward Cliff Island. Make your way over the tidal pools until you see Arch Rock standing out in the water. It’s truly a sight to see!

You’re welcome to go out to the rock, climb on the cliffs, and play in the tidal pools, but remember, it’s all at your own risk — so be careful! Lots of outdoor enthusiasts like to climb the rocks and jump into the water below. It’s quite the rush! And it’s one of the more unique natural sights Corona del Mar has to offer.

A large rock arch with the ocean behind it
Arch Rock is truly a spectacle!

Walk the Goldenrod Footbridge

In 1928, a footbridge was built over the newly constructed Bayside Drive. The idea was to allow people on the inland side of Bayside to be able to reach the beach in just a few minutes without having to cross a major road. Almost 100 years later, the bridge is still standing!

The Goldenrod Footbridge is a reminder of Corona del Mar’s olden days. It still spans the gap over Bayside Drive, allowing pedestrians to walk safely from one side of Corona del Mar to the beach. Stroll across and think about all the millions of people who have used the bridge before you over the past century!

Corona del Mar: An outdoor lover’s paradise

There’s no shortage of fun things to do in Corona del Mar. And true to the California climate, most of the activities are best done outside! Whether you want to enjoy your time at the beach, stroll through the gardens, jump from cliffs, or experience history, you can always find some fun in the sun when you visit Corona del Mar.

A Guide to Newport Beach, California

Aerial veiw of large houses on a peninsula
Wouldn’t you like to call this home?

Pristine golden beaches, world-class shopping and dining, glamorous harbor views, warm year-round climates, and the ultimate in luxury: where else can you find all these amazing amenities in one place besides Newport Beach?

Newport Beach is one of California’s premiere beach towns. People from all over the world flock to the area just for a taste of the SoCal good life. If you’re interested in experiencing the best of what LA has to offer, here’s a quick guide to Newport Beach, California.

Where is Newport Beach?

Newport Beach is in Orange County, CA in the southern part of Los Angeles. If you want to visit, just get on the world-famous Pacific Coast Highway (Rt. 1) and head south out of LA until you see Newport Beach. It’s easy to spot because of all the marinas and islands in Newport Bay.

You can stay on the mainland by following Rt. 1, or you can take one of the bridges over to Balboa Peninsula or explore the several islands in the area. They’re all part of the Newport Beach neighborhood!

Newport Beach includes all of Newport Bay, so the neighborhood reaches as far inland as Rt. 73, where you’ll find the Newport Beach Golf Course and the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. It also extends southeast up to Crystal Cove State Park.

Houses with docks on the harbor
Travel down Rt. 1 until you see something that looks like this!

Things to do in Newport Beach

There’s no shortage of things to do in Newport Beach, California. Like any good California coastal town, there are plenty of pristine beaches for you to experience. Newport Beach (just the beach, not the town) is located on the Balboa Peninsula and boasts five miles of fine soft sand, walking and biking paths, and plenty of ocean for every swimmer and surfer.

Head down the Balboa Peninsula, and you’ll also find the Balboa Pier for some incredible offshore fishing and the world-famous surf spot, The Wedge.

On the inland side of the peninsula, you’ll find tons of marinas in Newport Bay. The bay used to be a major commercial port, but now it’s almost all recreational. If you own a boat, Newport Bay is a great place to store your vessel to protect it from the harsh ocean waves.

Like any great California beach town, there are also tons and tons of shops, restaurants, and five-star resorts for you to experience. Because the bay is so large, many of them offer incredible water views while you shop and dine. There are also several world-class golf courses in Newport Beach that’ll please even PGA-level golfers.

A Guide to Corona del Mar Jetty

Corona del Mar, California is full of interesting places to see and things to do. But one of the best landmarks in the city that’ll make you “swell” with excitement is the Corona del Mar Jetty.

There are two jetties that jut out from the shore off of Corona del Mar. The east jetty comes off Corona del Mar State Beach, and the west jetty (the larger) is just across the channel entry to Newport Harbor. Of course, the jetty is more than just a bunch of rocks piled high in the ocean. Here’s everything you need to know about the Corona del Mar Jetty.

What to know about the jetty

Corona del Mar Beach has always been a popular spot. Back in the 1920s, it was a popular spot for surfers and beach parties alike. Unfortunately, the waves weren’t always consistent. However, that all changed.

The 800-foot jetty was installed off the rocks at Big Corona and ran all the way into the beach. Although it wasn’t really meant for surfers, it definitely helped.

Surfers could walk out on the jetty, get in the water at Big Corona, and ride the waves for a whopping 800 feet all the way into shore. Rinse, repeat, and you have yourself one of the best surf spots in the country! Even better, the jetty made the waves much, much bigger, leading to the iconic surf spot called The Wedge.

The jetties were extended later in the decade, and they currently reach over 1,500 feet off the coast of Corona del Mar. It’s quite the sight!

How to get to Corona del Mar Jetty

Since the Corona del Mar Jetty splits the Newport Harbor Channel, there are two different ways to get there.

The east jetty is accessible from Corona del Mar State Beach Park. Simply go to downtown Corona del Mar on Rt. 1 and find a road called Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Ave. all the way down to the coast until you see the beach. From there, head out onto the sand until you see the impressive jetty sticking out into the water.

If you want to get to the west jetty (and The Wedge), it takes a little more effort. Ride all the way through Corona del Mar on Rt 1 until you get to Newport Beach. Then, go over the bridge onto the Balboa Peninsula, and follow West Balboa Blvd. all the way to the end. When the pavement stops, you’ll see the even larger west jetty and the massive waves crashing to the shore.
